What to Wear and Bring for Your First Time Skiing or Snowboarding: A Complete Guide for Beginners

Thinking about hitting the slopes for the first time? Figuring out what to wear skiing or what to bring snowboarding can feel overwhelming, but you probably have more of what you need than you think, and Bousquet Mountain has you covered for the rest. Whether you’re trying skiing for the first time or strapping into a snowboard as a beginner, this guide will help you show up prepared, comfortable, and ready to have an awesome day on the mountain.

The Must-Haves: Rental Gear at Bousquet

Let’s start with the big stuff – the equipment you’ll actually use to slide down the mountain. Here’s what you need:

Skis or Snowboard + Boots If you’ve never skied or snowboarded before, you don’t own this gear yet, and that’s totally fine. Our on-site rental shop has everything you need, from beginner-friendly skis and snowboards to boots that fit properly. Renting is the smart move for first-timers because you can try it out with no commitment!

Pro tip: First-time skiers, you don’t need poles. Seriously. Leave them behind. Poles can actually make learning harder for beginners because they get in the way when you’re focused on balance and turning. You’ll have plenty of time to add poles later once you’ve got the basics down.

Helmet This one’s non-negotiable. A helmet keeps you safe and keeps your head warm. If you don’t own one, no problem – our rental shop has helmets available, and we can help you find the right fit.

Do I Need Lessons? If you’re brand new to skiing or snowboarding, a lesson is hands-down the best investment you can make. Our First Timers Package includes ski or snowboard rental, boots, a lesson, and an 8-hour lift ticket, everything you need for a successful first day. Having an instructor show you the ropes means you’ll spend less time frustrated and more time actually enjoying yourself. Bousquet also offers private lessons and group lessons, perfect if you have your own equipment or want a more individualized lesson experience.

What to Wear: Dressing for the Slopes (Without Breaking the Bank)

Now let’s talk clothing. The key to staying comfortable while skiing or snowboarding is layers. You’ll be alternating between sitting on a chairlift or riding a magic carpet, and working up a sweat as you ride down, so you want to be able to adjust your warmth throughout the day.

Layer 1: Base Layer (What’s Against Your Skin) Start with a long-sleeve shirt and long pants that wick moisture away from your body. Think of the kind of shirt you’d wear to the gym or on a hike: synthetic fabrics or merino wool work great. Avoid cotton if you can (like cotton t-shirts), because it holds moisture and will leave you cold and clammy.

If you don’t have technical base layers, a regular long-sleeve shirt will work just fine.

Layer 2: Mid Layer (Warmth) This is your insulation. A fleece, hoodie, or sweatshirt will do the trick here. The goal is to trap warm air close to your body. On warmer days, you might skip this layer entirely, but it’s good to have with you just in case.

Layer 3: Outer Layer (Protection from Wind and Snow) This is where a ski jacket and ski pants come in. Ideally, you want something waterproof and windproof to keep you dry and comfortable.

But here’s the real talk: If you’re on a budget or just testing out the sport, you can absolutely wear jeans or sweatpants to Bousquet. Yes, waterproof ski pants are better because they keep you dry if you’re sitting in the snow (and you probably will be), but regular pants work too. We want skiing and snowboarding to be accessible to everyone, and we’d rather see you out here in jeans having a blast than staying home because you didn’t have the “right” gear.

Our retail shop with Berkshire Bike & Board carries snow pants, jackets, and other outerwear if you decide you want to invest in waterproof options. But don’t let not having them stop you from coming out.

Gloves or Mittens Your hands are going to get cold and wet, especially as a beginner when you’re picking yourself up off the snow a lot. Waterproof gloves or mittens are key. If you have winter gloves, bring them. If not, our retail shop has plenty of options.

Warm Socks One pair of warm, cushioned socks is all you need. Ski socks or thick winter socks work great. Avoid wearing multiple pairs of socks – it actually makes your feet colder because it restricts blood flow in your boots.

Nice-to-Haves: Extras That Make Your Day Better

These items aren’t required, but they’ll make your time on the mountain way more comfortable:

Goggles Goggles protect your eyes from wind, snow, and sun glare. They’re especially helpful on snowy or windy days. If you don’t have goggles, sunglasses work well too! Our retail shop carries goggles if you want to pick up a pair.

Neck Warmer or Balaclava A neck gaiter or scarf keeps your face and neck warm on cold days. You can pull it up over your nose and mouth when you’re riding the chairlift.

Hand Warmers and Toe Warmers Disposable warmers are cheap, lightweight, and can be lifesavers on really cold days. Slip them into your gloves or boots for extra warmth.

Sunscreen and Lip Balm The sun reflects off the snow and can be surprisingly strong, even on cloudy days. Protect your skin and lips to avoid sunburn and windburn.
